Location, Location, Location

peggy jon and phil

Our Chair, Peggy Williams, gave us an engaging and entertaining talk on zoom on 21 July about her experience of featuring in Location, Location, Location in 2013 while she and husband Jon were searching for a house near the sea in North Norfolk.

When Peggy and Jon decided to move from Derby to Norfolk, they applied to be on the programme and after much pre-vetting they were called to an audition at a hotel in Mundesley, passed the screen test and got awarded Phil Spencer as their guide (to four selected properties), mentor and negotiator in chief. Their episode ended most happily because they loved the last house they were shown (it had to be the last one, didn’t it) and Phil cleverly negotiated a deal for them.

Peggy described the hectic three days of filming, recalling how most scenes were recorded at least twice, and illustrating for us all the frantic activity going on behind the camera while they were calmly in front of it - including a very chilly afternoon filming on Cromer Beach .

We learned that Peggy and Jon (well Jon really) set out looking for a “project” house to transform. We saw in the extracts from the episodes when Phil returned after they had moved in just how splendidly they did transform their house in Sheringham. I will not go into detail other than to say if any of you want a custom made book case, Jon is your man!

Peggy showed us several clips from the programmes that aired. She didn’t show us one that I found in the original programme. When Phil Spencer was chatting with Kirsty about their respective “clients” he said that he thought he had an older couple looking for a seaside bungalow and how easy that would be, but it turned out that Peggy and Jon “were massively energetic, want it all going on, and want to bling it up”. That’s no surprise at all to those of us who know Peggy in U3A.

The programme aired on 14 January 2014 (and it’s still there on Channel 4, Series 22, Episode 3 if you want to watch it in full).
