The Local History Group at its November meeting had a most interesting talk from Robert Easton, the joint owner of Easton Coaches based in Stratton Strawless.  The business was founded in 1953 in the Ratcatchers Public House in Cawston by his father Alfred originally as a taxi service.  Over the years the company began to run coaches for outings and school runs and slowly grew to the award- winning firm we see today

Several other local coach firms had been taken over as Easton’s grew but Robert emphasised that they always remained a family operation with a dedicated team of office, driving and maintenance staff.

The current fleet of coaches ranges from vintage vehicles which had been carefully restored such as a 1951 Duple bodied Albion Victor to state of the art luxury Mercedes Benz tourismo executive coaches which met all European emission standards and cost over a quarter of a million pounds each.  The old coaches were popular for weddings whilst the executive coaches had been used during the London Olympics.

It was fascinating to hear how this local company had grown from its small beginnings to provide outings and holidays from the Christmas shows at Thursford to cruises on the Norwegian fjords.
